Why pursue a career in hotel management? Is this the right profession for me?

If you’re looking for becoming a millionaire, working regular hours, having every weekend off, or for a healthy work-life balance, chances are that this is not the right business for you!
If you’re still reading this and feel that you’re up for the challenges that wait ahead of you, let me tell you that the opportunities are unlimited…
- You can travel the world (my favorite one)! Especially if you’re working for a large hotel company with hotels all over the world, transferring to other locations is easy and getting experiences abroad in other cultures will widen your horizon. The beauty is that it does not matter, if you work in Europe. Asia or the States, you always work with people.
- Hotels have different divisions and departments and if you’re not happy anymore in one of them, or find that you reached your potential, you can transfer to another one. During my apprenticeship I worked in every department of the hotel from stewarding, restaurants, housekeeping and front office, to human resources, sales and accounting for a couple of months, and many hotels offer internships based on one of their divisions.
- Every day is different, and you never get bored! I am working in New York City now for three years, and have yet to experience a single day, that I have to check my watch hoping for the day to be over.
- Hospitality is a people’s business! If it’s the guest, or employee, it all depends on how well you get along with the people around you. The energy that working with people can provide you with is limitless.
- If you decide to travel the world and end up in a metropole then the list of people you will meet along the way and lives you’ll touch is endless.
I started my career in hotels eight years ago, and cannot say that I loved every moment of my journey, but I don’t regret my decision, and would do it all over again… every time!
